Acacia timber drying: moisture, quality and acceptance

Drying adjusts timber moisture before machining and use. Specify the target according to the final application, service environment and subsequent processing. Dried timber can regain moisture, so discuss packaging and storage when ordering.

Drying for the intended application

Sort and stack stock before drying

Thickness, material condition and initial moisture influence drying plans. Stickers provide airflow between layers, while support and sticker alignment help control deformation. Correct stacking complements monitoring and inspection during drying.

Control heat, humidity and airflow

A drying schedule is selected for the species, thickness and moisture progression. An unsuitable drying rate can increase defects. Drying time should not be inferred solely from kiln volume or one fixed duration for all dimensions.

Inspect after drying and before dispatch

Check moisture together with dimensions, cracks, warping and surfaces. Agree the instrument or method, measurement positions, sampling and acceptance range. A single reading at one position is insufficient to establish compliance for an entire lot.

Specify dried timber correctly

Specify rough dry or S2S/S4S planed condition, acceptance dimensions, target moisture, tolerances and defect limits. Reference moisture ranges and grade descriptions must be translated into order-specific acceptance criteria.

Separate drying from export treatment requirements

Do not assume kiln-dried timber automatically meets export wood-packaging treatment and marking requirements. Provide the destination and required documentation for separate review before confirming an order. A drying description is not company certification or shipment documentation.
