Timber moisture: agree requirements before ordering

Suitable moisture depends on the final product, service environment and processing steps. A request for “dry timber” alone is insufficient for quotation or acceptance. Specify the desired range and application for order review.

Choose the target for the application

Suitable moisture depends on the final product, service environment and processing steps. A request for “dry timber” alone is insufficient for quotation or acceptance. Specify the desired range and application for order review.

Agree measurement and sampling

Agree the method or instrument, measurement positions, depth where applicable, sampling and acceptance timing. Use the instrument according to its instructions, including suitable species and measurement-condition settings. A single reading should not be assumed to represent an entire batch.

Check moisture alongside stock quality

Meeting the moisture target does not replace checks for dimensions, cracks, warping, knots and surfaces. Agree acceptance criteria for the intended use, particularly before planing, joining or finishing. Appearance and tolerance requirements must be specified separately from moisture.

Handle dried timber during storage and receipt

Dried timber continues to exchange moisture with its surroundings. Discuss packaging, transport and storage, and limit direct water exposure or conditions causing moisture accumulation. At receipt, check packaging and follow the agreed acceptance procedure before processing.

Document requirements in the quotation and contract

Record target moisture, acceptance range, measurement, sampling and inspection timing. Export wood-packaging treatment and documentation are reviewed separately; kiln drying alone should not be assumed to provide the required marking and documents.
